Worker killed as storm hits Sadiya and blocks NH-115 in Assam
A severe storm in Chapakhowa uprooted trees, damaged houses and disrupted electricity and road connectivity on Tuesday.
A severe storm struck Chapakhowa in Assam’s Tinsukia district around 2 am on Tuesday, killing a worker and causing widespread damage, according to reports by The Assam Tribune and Urban Acres.
Shiva Shankar Shah, 47, was killed in the Marowapatty area after a tree fell on an aluminium warehouse where he worked. Shah, a resident of Dhola, is survived by his wife and two children.
Local residents attempted a rescue after hearing the collapse, but the operation was difficult due to power outages. Because fallen trees prevented an ambulance from reaching the site, locals used a private car to transport Shah to the hospital. A resident noted that they waited approximately 15 to 20 minutes for a doctor, but Shah had already passed away.
The storm also uprooted trees across nearly one kilometre of National Highway 115 (NH-115), bringing vehicular movement to a standstill and leaving commuters stranded. Power lines and electric poles were also knocked down in the area.
In Tupsinga village, strong winds blew away tin roofs and damaged several houses. One family had to seek shelter in a nearby house that was also damaged by the storm. The village head visited the area to assess the destruction.
