Tamil Nadu permits six daily shows for new Tamil film releases

Theatres across the state can now conduct up to six screenings per day for one week following a film's release.

The Tamil Nadu government on Tuesday announced that theatres across the state are permitted to host up to six shows a day for new Tamil films during their first week of release. According to reports from The Hindu and ANI, the screenings can run from 6 am until 2.30 am the following day.

The decision follows requests from several industry groups, including the Tamil Film Producers Council, the Tamil Film Active Producers Associations, and the Tamil Nadu Theatre and Multiplex Owners Association. The move was made based on directions from Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay.

Previously, the Tamil Nadu Cinemas (Regulation) Rules, 1957, allowed for four screenings a day under Rule 14A. The state had recently permitted five shows a day for the first seven days of a film's release, as well as on public holidays, Saturdays, Sundays, and local festival days.

Under the new order, the limit for these specific days and the first week of a new film's release has been increased to six shows. The government intends to amend the 1957 rules to formalise this change.

The announcement comes ahead of Diwali. The government stated that the revised limit will apply to newly released Tamil films for one week from their release date.
