Two arrested for allegedly threatening people with firearms in Manipur

Security forces apprehended the two men in Imphal East district on Tuesday during a joint operation.

Security forces arrested two men for allegedly intimidating members of the public with firearms in Manipur’s Imphal East district, according to ThePrint on Wednesday.

The suspects, identified as 47-year-old Pukhrihongbam Shanta Singh and 56-year-old Sapam Premjit Singh, were apprehended on Tuesday. A joint team of police commandos and Assam Rifles personnel conducted the operation in the Arapti Mayai Leikai area under the Irilbung Police Station limits.

Police stated that one pistol and ammunition were seized from the possession of the two arrested individuals.

Security forces have been carrying out search operations across Manipur since ethnic violence began two years ago. The conflict, which started in May 2023 between the Meitei and Kuki communities, has resulted in at least 306 deaths and left 49 people missing.

Clashes between the Kuki and Naga communities in the hill districts have also been reported recently. At least 50 people have died in those clashes since February this year.
