The 2014-batch officer submitted his resignation on Monday following his removal from the Sagar district.
IPS officer Anurag Sujania has resigned from government service citing personal reasons, according to reports by The Hindu and Hindustan Times. Sujania, a 2014-batch officer, submitted his resignation on November 2, days after being transferred from his post as Sagar Superintendent of Police (SP) to Assistant Inspector General (AIG) at the police headquarters in Bhopal.
The transfer occurred on October 27, alongside the removal of Sagar Collector Pratibha Pal. This reshuffle followed a hooch tragedy in the Sagar district's Banda area in September, where consumption of spurious liquor resulted in deaths. While official figures confirm at least 16 deaths, some reports cite higher unofficial estimates.
A senior IPS officer confirmed that Sujania's resignation request has been forwarded to the state government. Sources in the police department told The Hindu that the officer was upset over the transfer, noting he believed the police had conducted a swift investigation and arrested the accused in the Sagar case.
Sujania previously served as SP in Morena and Mandsaur. Former Chief Minister Digvijaya Singh had previously criticised Sujania, noting that 24 people died in Morena in 2021 during his tenure as SP. An investigation at that time suggested illicit liquor sales occurred under police protection.
Chief Minister Mohan Yadav convened a meeting of senior police officers on Tuesday to review the state's law and order situation and discuss curbing the liquor mafia. The state government is yet to decide on Sujania's resignation.
