Punjab Police arrest 16 in Amritsar over arms and drug networks

Authorities recovered 34 kg of heroin, two UZI sub-machine guns, and two hand grenades during the operations.

Punjab Police arrested 16 people in Amritsar on Thursday after uncovering several narcotics and illegal arms trafficking networks, according to the Deccan Herald.

Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav stated that the suspects were allegedly communicating with handlers based abroad to supply weapons for criminal distribution.

During the operations, police seized 34 kg of heroin, two UZI sub-machine guns, two hand grenades, five illegal pistols, one 12-bore firearm, and 26 live cartridges.

The arrests also resolved three separate firing incidents in the district, including a fatal shooting at Jhita Kalan village on October 26 and a property dispute shooting in Beas.

In Mehta, police arrested Sahibpreet Singh alias Sahab in connection with a restaurant firing following a Rs 1-crore extortion call.

Separate FIRs have been filed at the Gharinda, Beas, Mehta, Lopoke, and Chatiwind police stations as investigators work to find other members of the network.
