Physician Amish Shah defeated Republican Jay Feely to become the first Indian-American to represent Arizona in Congress.
Indian-American physician Amish Shah claimed victory in the election for the U.S. House of Representatives from Arizona's First Congressional District on Wednesday, according to The Hindu.
Shah, 48, became the sixth Indian-American elected to the U.S. House of Representatives and the first from his community to represent Arizona in Congress.
The Democrat secured 52.49 per cent of the vote, defeating Republican Jay Feely, who received 45.45 per cent. Feely, a former National Football League player endorsed by President Donald Trump, lost the race in a seat that Shah flipped from Republican control.
In a post on X, Shah said, "Arizona, it's the honour of a lifetime to be your next congressman." He also commended Feely on a hard-fought race and pledged to represent all voters.
Shah, a three-term member of the Arizona House of Representatives, stated he intends to work on lowering costs, expanding health care coverage, solving the water crisis, and growing the economy.
Indian American Impact congratulated Shah, with Executive Director Chintan Patel noting that Shah, an emergency room doctor, ran to address unaffordable care and climbing costs.
