Iran war caused Republican midterm losses, says US Vice-President Vance
JD Vance attributed the Republican party's midterm election defeat to the ongoing conflict in Iran.
US Vice-President JD Vance said on Wednesday that the war in Iran was the reason Republicans lost the midterm elections, according to The Hindu. Vance made these remarks in a post on X, suggesting that any discussion regarding the future must address the conflict.
The Vice-President's comments follow remarks by President Donald Trump, who stated the war was "part of it" but remained justified. Vance had reportedly expressed scepticism regarding the war, which Trump launched in February.
The conflict has seen recent military activity, with the US striking two sites in Iran a day before the elections. Iranian media reported explosions on Qeshm Island near the Strait of Hormuz and in the port city of Bandar Lengeh.
In an effort to pursue peace, Vance sent a personal letter to Iran’s Mohsen Rezaei, the secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Council, via Qatari mediators. The letter proposed an immediate resumption of direct peace talks.
Trita Parsi, an Iranian-Swedish international relations scholar and vice president of the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft, noted that the tone of the letter was appreciated by Iranians. He remains in contact with senior officials in both the US and Iran.
