Telangana government to study water conservation in Rajasthan and Maharashtra

The state government plans to adapt successful practices from other states as groundwater levels decline in 554 mandals.

The Telangana government is looking at conservation methods in Rajasthan and Maharashtra to address a deepening groundwater crisis, according to Telangana Today. The state is studying recharge initiatives in Rajasthan and water conservation programmes in Maharashtra to develop an action plan.

An October report from the Telangana Groundwater Department shows the average groundwater level is 7.77 metres below ground level. This is a decline of two metres compared to October last year, with 89 per cent of mandals recording a decline against the decadal average.

Irrigation and Civil Supplies Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy directed officials during a review meeting on Thursday to adapt successful practices from these states. He also assured that adequate funding, including amounts beyond the existing budget, would be provided if necessary.

The Minister called for a district-wise assessment and instructed the Groundwater Department to meet with officials from all districts. This meeting aims to review current works, identify areas needing urgent intervention, and prepare an action plan.

The crisis follows a 24 per cent rainfall deficit during the June-October monsoon. Greater Hyderabad was among the most affected areas, where the average water table fell by 7.17 metres in one year.
