Silchar's first Municipal Corporation begins five-year term with governance pledge
Mayor Amarendra Paul and Deputy Mayor Bijendra Prasad Singh took their oaths of office on Thursday at Rajiv Bhawan.
Mayor Amarendra Paul, Deputy Mayor Bijendra Prasad Singh, and several councillors were sworn in on Thursday as Silchar's first Municipal Corporation commenced its five-year term, according to The Assam Tribune. The ceremony took place at Rajiv Bhawan, marking a significant development for the town's civic administration, which dates back to 1882.
Mayor Paul stated that mitigating waterlogging is his administration's top priority and requested assistance from residents to address urban issues. Deputy Mayor Singh said his first initiative would be to provide death certificates to families during cremations to prevent repeated visits to municipal offices.
Singh also emphasised the importance of transparent, corruption-free services, noting that citizen convenience should measure administrative efficiency. He added that collective efforts would guide the corporation during its 1,825-day tenure.
Barak Valley Development Department Cabinet Minister Krishnendu Paul urged representatives to meet resident expectations and ensure hassle-free access to documents. He identified improper garbage disposal, traffic congestion, and waterlogging as major challenges.
Cabinet Minister Kaushik Rai, who holds the Housing and Urban Affairs portfolio, said the state government would cooperate and suggested accelerating online services. He stated that municipal forms would be provided free of cost to improve access.
The Mayor and Deputy Mayor positions will follow a rotational reservation system. For this initial term, both posts are open, while future terms will be reserved for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and women in a 20-year cycle.
