Assam pays tributes to Bhupen Hazarika on 15th death anniversary

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and other leaders honoured the Bharat Ratna recipient as birth centenary celebrations conclude.

Tributes were paid to the legendary singer and composer Dr Bhupen Hazarika across Assam on Thursday to mark his 15th death anniversary, according to reports by ThePrint, The Sentinel and The Assam Tribune.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma described the Bharat Ratna awardee's contribution to the state's cultural landscape as unparalleled in a social media post. Hazarika, known as the Bard of Brahmaputra, died in Mumbai in 2011.

In Guwahati, commemorative events took place at the singer's memorial in Jalukbari and his statue by Dighalipukhuri. Jalukbari MLA Vijay Gupta and Minister Biswajit Daimary offered floral tributes at the Jalukbari site.

The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) used the occasion to renew six demands, including renaming Guwahati Railway Station after Hazarika and incorporating his works into academic curricula. AASU chief adviser Samujjal Bhattacharya also called for an international research institute and a dedicated cultural train in the singer's name.

In Goalpara, the Axam Xahitya Xabha (AXX) led programmes including a tree plantation drive. The day also marks the official end of the year-long birth centenary celebrations that began on September 8, 2025.

The centenary celebrations are scheduled to conclude on November 29 in New Delhi in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
