Roy secured 66.44 per cent of the vote to become the second woman to hold the citywide office.
Indian-American lawyer Marissa Roy is projected to become the next Los Angeles city attorney following the November 3 election, according to reports from Moneycontrol, Firstpost and News18. Roy received 393,607 votes, representing 66.44 per cent of the total, while her opponent John McKinney, a Los Angeles County prosecutor, secured 198,831 votes or 33.56 per cent.
The 34-year-old is set to take over from Hydee Feldstein Soto, who was the first woman to hold the position after her 2022 election. Soto was eliminated during the June election while running for a second term.
Roy, the daughter of an Indian immigrant mother and a white American father, grew up in Monrovia. She attended Flintridge Preparatory School and the University of Southern California (USC) before attending Yale Law School.
Her legal career includes working at the Los Angeles City Attorney's Office starting in 2017 and serving as a deputy attorney general in California Attorney General Rob Bonta's office. In her previous roles, she worked on cases involving immigration policies, consumer protection, and litigation against Meta.
Roy's campaign featured the use of Bollywood music on Instagram and her signature amethyst-coloured blazers. She ran on a platform focused on supporting new housing development across the city.
