Chennai police deploy 18,000 personnel for Diwali security

Authorities have implemented drone surveillance, facial recognition, and watchtowers to manage crowds and prevent theft in busy shopping areas.

The Greater Chennai Police have deployed 18,000 personnel across the city to ensure shopper safety ahead of Diwali, according to The Times of India. Greater Chennai Police Commissioner A Amalraj directed officials to increase security in commercial hubs like T. Nagar, Pondy Bazaar, Purasawalkam, NSC Bose Road, MC Road, GA Road, Koyambedu, and Anna Nagar.

To monitor crowded areas, the police have set up 25 temporary watchtowers. These include 10 in T. Nagar, four in both Flower Bazaar and Kilpauk, two in Washermenpet, Triplicane, and Koyambedu, and one in Adyar.

Additionally, 37 binocular surveillance teams will monitor for suspicious activity.

Technological measures include seven drones operating in T. Nagar, Flower Bazaar, Triplicane, and Koyambedu, along with 205 new CCTV cameras. The force is also using 100 body-worn cameras and 199 teams equipped with a Facial Recognition System (FRS) mobile application to track habitual offenders.

To manage the crowds, authorities have established 12 temporary control rooms, 37 assistance centres, and 10 mini CCTV control rooms. Safety instructions and theft warnings are being broadcast via 66 public address systems and four large LED screens.

Officers in plainclothes have been stationed in shopping districts to prevent pickpocketing and chain-snatching. Mobile X-ray baggage scanners are also being used to inspect belongings at markets and shopping malls.
