Two dead after three-storey building collapses in Old Delhi

Rescue teams are searching for workers feared trapped after a construction site collapsed near Chawri Bazar Metro station on Thursday morning.

Two people were killed and one person was injured after a three-storey building under construction partially collapsed in the Gali Sattara area of Old Delhi on Thursday morning. The incident occurred near the Chawri Bazar Metro station at approximately 9:50 am, according to reports from Urban Acres and Rediff.

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and Delhi Fire Service joined rescue operations to search the rubble for people feared trapped. DCP (Central) Rohit Rajbir Singh stated that around 15 construction workers were at the site when the collapse happened. So far, six to seven workers have been accounted for, including four who escaped unhurt.

Three workers were pulled from the debris, with two declared dead and the third reported to be out of danger. Local residents reportedly rescued four people and shifted them to a hospital before fire personnel arrived, according to The Hindu.

The collapse involved a three-storey structure being built on a 50 square yard plot. DCP (Central) Rohit Rajbir Singh said a preliminary probe suggests construction had been underway for about 1.5 months and that the pillar structure allegedly could not bear the load.

Emergency teams faced operational difficulties due to the narrow lanes and dense urban development of the Chawri Bazar area. Six fire units, including water tenders and rescue vehicles, were deployed to the site to manage the operation.
