Delhi Forensic Science Laboratory pendency drops 79 per cent in one year

The Delhi government has approved a new Rs 151.80 crore regional laboratory at Sheikh Sarai to support the existing facility in Rohini.

The number of cases awaiting examination at the Delhi Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) has decreased from approximately 27,000 to 5,700 in about a year, according to The Indian Express.

This decline of 78.88 per cent was attributed by the Delhi government to administrative and operational measures implemented under Home Minister Ashish Sood. The reduction is expected to accelerate police investigations and court proceedings by minimising delays in forensic report submissions.

Home Minister Ashish Sood stated that the decrease in pending cases is a vital move toward providing quicker criminal justice in the capital. He added that the administration aims to combine scientific accuracy with speed to serve citizens.

To strengthen forensic capacity, the Delhi government has sanctioned a new Regional Forensic Science Laboratory (RFSL) at Sheikh Sarai at a cost of Rs 151.80 crore. This facility is intended to reduce the workload at the main FSL in Rohini.

The government is also planning to upgrade existing infrastructure, establish specialised laboratories, and deploy new digital equipment and machinery. To address staff shortages, the government has begun filling vacant regular posts and has extended the tenure of technical and contractual staff.

The Home Minister's office noted that these measures should assist investigating agencies in completing probes more rapidly and reduce delays in legal trials.
