Farmers block road in Mysuru to protest KSRTC bus fare hike

Members of the State Sugarcane Growers’ Association demanded a rollback of the fare increase during a protest on Thursday.

Farmers belonging to the State Sugarcane Growers’ Association held a road blockade near the Suburban Bus Stand in Mysuru on Thursday. The protest was directed against the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus fare hike.

According to The Hindu, the demonstration lasted for more than an hour. Led by association president Hallikerehundi Bhagyaraj, the protesters shouted slogans against the State government and the Transport Minister.

Addressing the group, Bhagyaraj accused the Congress government of placing extra costs on the public after promising five guarantees. He alleged the government is trying to cover the transport corporation's estimated losses of ₹24,000 crore by raising fares.

Bhagyaraj also criticised elected representatives for increasing their own salaries while passing government expenses to citizens. He suggested that Ministers, MLAs, and MPs should use their salaries to support guarantee schemes instead of implementing price hikes.

The association president urged farmers and the public to oppose the increase and suggested non-payment of the additional fare as a method of protest.
