Cosmoserve Space opens satellite servicing and debris recovery facility in Hyderabad

The new Base 1 facility follows a $6 million seed funding round that brings the startup's total funding to over $9 million.

Spacetech startup Cosmoserve Space inaugurated Base 1, a facility for designing, building, testing, and operating satellite servicing and space debris recovery systems, in Hyderabad on Thursday, according to BusinessLine.

Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology Jitendra Singh and Telangana IT and Industries Minister D Sridhar Babu attended the opening. The facility includes a mission simulation and control centre, a clean room for satellite integration, a space robotics lab, and an orbital rendezvous and capture lab.

Cosmoserve Space Founder and CEO Chiranjeevi Phanindra said the centre will facilitate the refuelling and in-orbit repair of satellites in addition to debris removal.

The company aims to decrease reliance on imports for space-grade electronics, avionics, and optics by developing more technology in-house. Currently, the firm sources nearly 60 per cent of its mission components locally.

Under its Dual Spacecraft Architecture, a large Orbital Service Station serves as a logistics hub while an Autonomous Service Vehicle moves to satellites for repair, capture, or removal. The company stated these spacecraft could service up to 100 satellites, which may lower servicing costs from approximately $10 million to under $1 million per satellite.

The firm plans to re-fly Mission Embrace and perform a full-scale demonstration of debris capture in 2027. Minister Sridhar Babu noted that Hyderabad hosts more than 30 spacetech companies and that the State Government intends to create a Space City within the upcoming Bharat Future City.
