Housing Trust Silicon Valley unveils 10-year plan following MacKenzie Scott donation

The San Jose-based nonprofit aims to expand affordable housing and homeownership initiatives across the Bay Area using a $30 million gift.

Housing Trust Silicon Valley announced a 10-year strategy on September 30, 2025, to transform a $30 million donation into long-term housing solutions. According to the Times of India, the San Jose-based community loan fund received the unrestricted gift from MacKenzie Scott’s Yield Giving fund in 2024.

The decade-long plan includes five major initiatives: expanding lending capital, growing homeownership programmes starting in 2026, strengthening policy advocacy, launching an impact measurement framework in early 2026, and investing in housing innovation. The organisation intends to use the funds to increase equity and affordability across the 14-county greater Bay Area.

Housing Trust CEO Noni Ramos said the gift provides the freedom to scale successful models and take risks on new ideas. Board Chair Lisa Gutierrez stated the strategy aims to build momentum to attract new partners and support loans for rental housing preservation.

The nonprofit has been operating since 2000 and marks its 25th anniversary this year. The organisation reported that it has invested more than $690 million to date, facilitating over 28,700 affordable housing units and assisting more than 53,800 residents in securing affordable homes.

Recent projects supported by the fund include a $2 million loan for 90 affordable homes at Meridian Apartments in Sunnyvale and a $4 million loan for the 66-unit Vivalon development in San Rafael. Further details regarding the lending capital initiative are expected at an investor briefing on October 15.
