Sachin Tendulkar praises Joe Root as he nears Test run record
The Indian cricket legend noted he has admired the England captain since his debut in 2012.
Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar has expressed high regard for England captain Joe Root, who is approaching Tendulkar's record for the most runs in Test cricket, according to reports from The News Mill and The Tribune.
During a Reddit Ask Me Anything (AMA) session on November 3, Tendulkar stated that he had valued Root's talent since the Englishman's first Test match, noting it was clear early on that he would achieve great success.
Root currently holds the position of the second-highest run-scorer in Test history with 14,278 runs. He requires 1,643 more runs to equal the record of 15,921 runs held by Tendulkar.
Root made his Test debut against India in Nagpur in December 2012. In that match, which ended in a draw, he scored 73 runs in the first innings and finished 20 not out in the second.
When discussing his preferred non-Indian batters, Tendulkar mentioned Joe Root, Harry Brook of England, and Steve Smith of Australia.
Tendulkar also suggested a change to the One-Day International (ODI) format. He proposed splitting the 50 overs into two 25-over innings per side while maintaining 10 wickets and using a single ball to ensure the contest between bat and ball remains balanced.
