Tamil Nadu leads in research and patents on Niti Aayog scoreboard

Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, and Maharashtra emerged as the top three states for research publications following the launch of a new dashboard.

Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, and Maharashtra have been identified as the leading states in research publications according to the Niti Aayog India Science and Technology (S&T) Scoreboard launched on Tuesday, Rediff reported.

The scoreboard shows Tamil Nadu recorded 44,611 research publications in 2024-25, while Uttar Pradesh had 29,298 and Maharashtra had 28,947.

In the category of patent applications, Tamil Nadu holds the first position, with Maharashtra and Karnataka following behind.

Niti Aayog Vice Chairman Ashok Kumar Lahiri said that the progress of science and technology in India necessitates more active participation from states.

He stated that the platform, guided by cooperative and competitive federalism, will assist states in identifying gaps and designing better science and technology programmes.

Niti Aayog Member (S&T) Abhay Karandikar noted that research data has previously been fragmented, making it difficult for states to assess their standing.

The interactive dashboard integrates data on the S&T ecosystem, including R&D institutions, deep tech startups, and incubators, to facilitate evidence-based policymaking.
