The Union Health Minister reviewed the construction and operational progress of the medical institute in Jammu and Kashmir.

Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare and Chemicals and Fertilisers JP Nadda reviewed the construction and operationalisation progress of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Awantipora in Jammu and Kashmir on November 5, according to The News Mill.

Nadda evaluated infrastructure development, staff recruitment, and the procurement of furniture and medical equipment. He instructed the relevant bodies to finish the remaining construction work by March 2027, noting that the project is a priority.

Officials stated that major buildings are finished and construction is nearing completion. Phase I buildings, including residential buildings, hostels, and OPD blocks, are complete, with inventory verification and handover processes currently underway.

The Ministry has authorised the purchase of 180 medical equipment items worth Rs 59.41 crore, with Notices of Award already issued for 140 of these items. Nadda directed Hindustan Infrastructure & Technical Engineering Services (HITES) and the Executive Director of AIIMS Awantipora to speed up the procurement of laboratory and OPD instruments.

The Minister also reviewed recruitment, calling for the fast-tracking of faculty and non-faculty hiring. The planned manpower includes 652 positions, which covers 150 security personnel and support staff such as housekeeping and hospital attendants.

OPD services are intended to start before December 2026, while inpatient services are expected in July 2027. Academic activities, including MBBS classes, are proposed for the 2027–28 session starting in June–July 2027.
