Vaishnavi Adkar exits Chennai Open after second-round defeat to Zakharova
Maaya Rajeshwaran Revathi remains India's sole singles representative after advancing to the doubles quarterfinals.
India's top-ranked tennis player Vaishnavi Adkar lost 3-6, 0-6 to Russia's seventh seed Anastasia Zakharova in the second round of the Chennai Open on Thursday, according to Rediff.
The 21-year-old Adkar, a wild-card entrant, struggled against Zakharova's powerful backhand and consistency. After trailing 2-5 in the first set, Adkar took a medical timeout for a niggle in her left thigh and played the remainder of the match with her thigh strapped.
Adkar said the thigh issue was a niggle rather than an injury but noted she struggled with the intensity of the match. She won only four of 26 points during the second set.
Maaya Rajeshwaran Revathi remains the only Indian player in the singles draw after defeating Poland's Weronika Falkowska 6-4, 6-3. The 17-year-old wild-card entrant will face American Robin Montgomery in the quarterfinals on Friday.
In the doubles competition, Revathi and partner Shirvalli Bhamdipati advanced to the quarterfinals by defeating the third-seeded Czech team of Aneta Kucmova and Aneta Laboutkova.
Other second-round winners included Japan's Mai Hontama, Poland's Magda Linette, and Italy's Lucrezia Stefanini.
