Hyderabad hostel inmates vacate accommodation due to water scarcity

Students and employees left hostels in several areas across Hyderabad and Cyberabad as water shortages caused occupancy to fall.

Hundreds of hostel residents in Hyderabad and Cyberabad have vacated their premises over the last 48 hours due to a severe water shortage, according to Telangana Today. The movement includes students and private-sector employees from areas such as Gachibowli, Anjaiah Nagar, Ameerpet, Himayat Nagar, and Kukatpally.

Some residents are searching for new accommodation with reliable water supplies, while others have been left stranded. Private employee A Deepika said residents had paid for secure rooms but were instead receiving sudden eviction notices because of the scarcity.

Mohan Kumar, who had recently moved into a hostel and paid a monthly fee of Rs 7,500 with five months remaining, described the overnight requirement to leave as unfair. Resident Krishna Reddy, who has stayed in an SR Nagar hostel for one year, said they only require enough water for basic daily needs.

Hostel operators in Gachibowli reported that primary water lines and borewells are exhausted. They alleged that unregulated deep drilling and illegal tanker operations have depleted local aquifers, making them reliant on expensive private water.

Operators noted that tanker costs have doubled while falling occupancy has reduced the revenue used to purchase water. They warned of potential financial collapse or shutdowns unless municipal authorities provide subsidised water or restore supplies.
