Delhi police bust fake call centre in Janakpuri
Five people including the owner were arrested for allegedly duping customers through fraudulent insurance-related schemes in west Delhi.
Delhi police raided a fake call centre in Janakpuri, west Delhi, on Wednesday night and apprehended 43 people, according to the Hindustan Times.
The group allegedly impersonated insurance company representatives to dupe policyholders and prospective clients with fraudulent benefits and upgrade offers. Among those detained were 32 women.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Hareshwar V Swami said five people were arrested, including the 35-year-old owner and alleged mastermind Vishal Kapoor. Other arrested individuals include administration head Nitin Sharma, 39, human resources manager Gunjan, 23, and managers Bheem, 35, and Ajay, 24.
The remaining 38 tele-callers were not officially arrested but were bound down. The arrested individuals have been booked for cheating and criminal conspiracy at the Janakpuri police station.
DCP Swami stated the accused tricked clients by offering lower premiums and waiving agent commissions. Once victims agreed to KYC, the premium was transferred into mule accounts before the SIM cards used for the fraud were destroyed.
Police recovered a database of clients from at least four private insurance companies and are investigating how the accused obtained it. The probe is also looking into the source of the bulk SIM cards and mule bank accounts.
