Passengers were evacuated safely after a fire affected the Amritsar-New Jalpaiguri unreserved train near Sarai Banjara station on Friday.
A fire broke out in four coaches of the Karmabhoomi Express near Sarai Banjara station in Punjab's Ambala division on Friday, November 6. The train, which runs between Amritsar and New Jalpaiguri, stopped after its automated safety system was activated, according to reports by The Pioneer and The News Mill.
No injuries or deaths have been reported. Three coaches sustained extensive damage, while a fourth was partially affected, railway authorities said. Northern Railway fire tenders and senior officials arrived at the site to bring the blaze under control.
Passengers were guided on foot approximately 500 metres to a nearby station to board an alternative train arranged by the railway. Senior Divisional Commercial Manager Yashanjit Singh said the primary concern was ensuring passengers reach their destinations safely and that alternative arrangements had been made.
Northern Railway Chief Public Relations Officer Himanshu Shekhar Upadhyay stated that the cause of the fire has not been determined. A formal technical investigation has been ordered to examine electrical lines, mechanical systems, or external factors.
While sources suggested a short circuit might be the cause, the official cause remains unconfirmed. Police and railway authorities are conducting an inquiry into the incident.
