Gujarat officials urged to strengthen procurement checks to prevent irregularities

The state vigilance commission and industries commissionerate held a workshop in Gandhinagar to promote transparency in government purchases.

The Gujarat state vigilance commission and the industries commissionerate organised a state-level workshop in Gandhinagar on Thursday to improve transparency in procurement. According to The Times of India, the event aimed to help government departments and public sector undertakings strengthen preventive vigilance.

The workshop, held during Vigilance Awareness Week 2026, focused on the theme of preventive vigilance in government procurement. It was attended by Class I and II procurement officers, heads of departments, and senior administrative officers.

Sessions during the programme addressed how to close procedural loopholes in government buying. Specific emphasis was placed on following e-tendering thresholds, using the government e-marketplace (GeM), and verifying content claims related to the Make In India initiative.

Officials were warned against certain practices, such as clubbing unrelated items in one tender or splitting procurement quantities to avoid prescribed procedures. Such actions were noted as practices that can undermine competition.

The workshop encouraged a shift from investigating irregularities after they happen to using stronger protocols and institutional safeguards. The goal is to help officers avoid audit objections and administrative delays while following prescribed rules.
