Montgomery defeats Maaya to end Indian singles run in Chennai

The American player won 6-3, 6-3 in the WTA 250 quarter-finals to advance to the semifinals.

American Robin Montgomery defeated Indian wildcard Maaya Rajeshwaran Revathi 6-3, 6-3 in the quarter-finals of the WTA 250 Chennai Open on Friday. According to reports from The Hindu and Hindustan Times, the win ended the singles run of the 17-year-old from Coimbatore at the SDAT Stadium.

Maaya, currently ranked 669th in the world, became the first Indian woman to reach a WTA 250 quarter-final since Sania Mirza in 2012. During the tournament, she defeated higher-ranked opponents Katarzyna Kawa and Weronika Falkowska. She is expected to rise approximately 180 spots in the rankings when updated figures are published on Monday.

Montgomery, who is ranked 151st, used her left-handed serve to gain an advantage. While Maaya secured an early break in the first set, Montgomery responded to win the set and later secured a double break in the second set to finish the match.

Following the victory, Montgomery said she focused on what she could control while playing against a home favourite. She will face top seed and defending champion Janice Tjen in the semifinals on Saturday.

In other quarter-final action, Indonesia's Janice Tjen defeated Polina Kudermetova 5-7, 6-4, 6-2. In the doubles event, Vaishnavi Adkar and Rutuja Bhosale advanced to the semifinals after defeating Montgomery and Jodie Burrage 7-5, 6-4.
