Zakharova defeats Vaishnavi Adkar to reach Chennai Open quarter-finals
The Russian seventh seed won 6-3, 6-0 against the India No. 1 to advance in the WTA 250 tournament.
Anastasia Zakharova defeated Vaishnavi Adkar 6-3, 6-0 on Thursday to reach the quarter-finals of the WTA 250 Chennai Open. The seventh-seeded Russian used powerful groundstrokes to overcome the India No. 1 in the Round of 16 match.
According to The Times of India and India Today, Adkar struggled with unforced errors throughout the match, committing 32 compared to 19 from Zakharova. The Pune player took a medical timeout during the first set to receive treatment for her left thigh, which was heavily strapped.
Zakharova, the world No. 107, increased her aggression in the second set to take advantage of Adkar's slower first serves. Adkar had previously reached the Round of 16 after a comeback victory against Jodie Burrage.
With Adkar's exit, Maaya Rajeshwaran Revathi remains India's sole representative in the women's singles draw. The 17-year-old wildcard entrant secured a 6-4, 6-3 win against Weronika Falkowska to reach her maiden WTA quarter-final.
In other results, third seed Magda Linette defeated Moyuka Uchijima 7-6(5), 6-0. Additionally, the Indian duo of Maaya Rajeshwaran Revathi and Shrivalli Bhamidipatty won 6-3, 6-2 against Aneta Kladivova and Aneta Laboutkova to enter the quarter-finals.
