Texas farmers fund $3 million in scholarships through volunteer crop cultivation

A community-led initiative in the Texas Panhandle uses donated farmland to provide financial aid to hundreds of students.

Local farmers in the Texas Panhandle have generated nearly $3 million in scholarships for approximately 300 students by cultivating donated land for free, according to a Times of India report.

The 640-acre property was left to the Gruver Independent School District (ISD) in 1984 by longtime resident Karl Nielsen.

While the district previously leased the land for rental income, the Gruver Farm Scholarship Foundation was established on March 26, 2012, to fund college education directly.

Under this arrangement, farmers volunteer their labour, seeds, and machinery to grow corn and wheat on about 410 irrigated acres.

The proceeds from these harvests, which can reach around $400,000 annually, are used to provide financial assistance to Gruver High School graduates.

Scholarship amounts are determined by student points earned through academics, test scores, and community service, with some individuals receiving up to $40,000.
