Tamil Nadu to set up district panels for tax grievance redressal
The committees will be chaired by collectors and include officials, businesses, and consumers to resolve local tax issues.
The Tamil Nadu government will establish taxpayer advisory committees in every revenue district to resolve tax-related complaints locally, according to The New Indian Express.
Minister D Logesh Tamilselvan announced the initiative during a review meeting of Joint Commissioners’ performance in Chennai on Tuesday. The panels aim to address issues without requiring taxpayers to visit state headquarters.
Chaired by district collectors, these committees will meet every quarter to review sales tax complaints and consider suggestions. The panels are scheduled to function until November 30, 2029.
The committees will consist of official members, such as the joint commissioner (state tax) and the general manager of the District Industries Centre, and non-official members. Non-official members will include one MLA, representatives from agricultural producers, manufacturers, wholesalers, retailers, cooperative institutions, cottage industries, and consumers.
Divisional Joint Commissioners have been instructed to form these committees by November 30 and hold their initial meetings by December 15. The deputy commissioner (state tax) at the district headquarters will act as secretary.
Separately, the registration department reported revenue of Rs 1,950 crore in October 2026, an increase of Rs 147 crore from the same month last year. Tamilselvan noted that 2,46,260 documents were registered via the department's faceless facility between August 17 and November 3.
