Woman falls to death from seventh floor of Brazil hotel
The 26-year-old woman died after the window frame she was leaning against gave way in Sao Luis.
A 26-year-old woman died after a window frame gave way while she was leaning against it at a hotel in Sao Luis, Brazil, according to News18. Renata Rebeca Negrao Saldanha dos Santos fell from the seventh floor of the Rio Poty Hotel in Ponta d’Areia at approximately 1.30 am on Tuesday.
The woman fell onto a canopy above the hotel entrance. Although she received immediate medical attention, she later died from her injuries. The deceased was a mother of two and had travelled from Para to Sao Luis on October 28 to play poker.
Surveillance footage captured the moment the woman sat on a corridor window edge and leaned against the aluminium frame before it failed. Her boyfriend, who was with her, appeared to stand still for several seconds before a hotel employee arrived.
Police chief George Marques stated that CCTV footage indicates the incident was an accident. Marques told the Daily Mail that there was no push and the boyfriend was not close to her at the time. While the boyfriend was questioned by police, he was released as footage showed no signs of assault.
Police noted that the couple seemed to be under the influence of alcohol or other substances. Investigators are currently looking into the cause of the structural failure of the window and are expected to question hotel staff.
The Rio Poty Hotel said it is cooperating with the investigation and expressed condolences to the family. The woman's mother, Betty Negrao, told local broadcaster TV Liberal that her daughter had gone out to have fun.
