Six killed in shooting at Krakow Main Market Square
A gunman driving a car opened fire on pedestrians in southern Poland on Saturday afternoon.
Six people, including four women and two men, were killed and at least 12 others were injured during a shooting at the Main Market Square in Krakow on Saturday, according to reports from Moneycontrol, WION, and The Tribune.
The incident occurred around 3 pm local time when a man in a black car drove into the square and fired an AR-15-style rifle at people from the moving vehicle near Sławkowska Street.
Police officers neutralised the suspect, identified as a Polish man acting alone and dressed in military-style gear, during a confrontation. The shooter was wounded by police gunfire and was being transported to a hospital under heavy guard.
Małopolska Police confirmed that several people, including police officers, were among those injured. The City of Krakow urged residents and visitors to stay away from areas where emergency responders were operating, including Dietla Street.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated that the police are investigating the background and circumstances of the attack. Justice Minister Waldemar Zurek said that prosecutors and police are working at the scene and promised the perpetrator would be held accountable.
President Karol Nawrocki expressed his concern for the victims and noted that the head of the National Security Bureau was travelling to Krakow. Authorities have not yet disclosed a motive for the shooting.
