Saudi airstrikes kill 22 people near Yemen capital Sanaa

The latest attack in al-Shariya village brings the reported death toll from two separate strikes in two days to at least 52 people.

At least 22 people were killed and 30 others wounded in airstrikes on al-Shariya village near Sanaa on Saturday, according to the Houthi-run health ministry, as reported by The Times of India.

Anees Alasbahi, a spokesperson for the Houthi-run Health Ministry, said most of those killed or wounded in the Saturday attack were women and children. Alasbahi accused Saudi Arabia of carrying out the strikes, though Riyadh had not issued an immediate response to the allegation.

The incident follows a strike on al-Hadara market in the al-Waziyah district of Taiz province on Friday. Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree claimed three airstrikes hit the market and accused Saudi Arabia of conducting them from the Khamis Mushait air base.

Authorities aligned with the Saudi-backed government denied that any airstrikes took place in the market area. The provincial media office acknowledged the market was attacked and casualties occurred, but accused the Houthis of carrying out indiscriminate missile attacks.

The two recent incidents come during renewed fighting between the Houthis and forces backing Yemen's internationally recognised government. The Houthis control much of the territory surrounding the provincial capital of Taiz, which remains under government control.
