Hooda calls two-year Agniveer extension inadequate, demands regularisation

The former Haryana chief minister requested that Agniveers be made permanent soldiers without any conditions.

Former Haryana chief minister and Leader of Opposition (LoP) Bhupinder Singh Hooda on Thursday stated that the proposed two-year service extension for Agniveers is insufficient. Speaking to reporters at his residence, Hooda demanded that these personnel be regularised without any conditions, according to the Hindustan Times.

Hooda questioned why additional criteria should be required for individuals who have already completed six years of service. He argued that every person joining the army should receive permanent employment, regular salaries, allowances, facilities, and a pension.

The Congress leader also noted that his party has opposed the Agnipath scheme from the start, claiming it does not serve the interests of the army or the country. He mentioned that several former Army officers have also raised objections to the scheme.

Regarding the extension, the revised scheme allows 25 per cent of Agniveers to receive immediate regular employment based on merit after four years. The remaining 75 per cent can opt for a second two-year engagement, which includes higher remuneration and an enhanced Seva Nidhi package.

Under the new arrangement, Agniveers may enrol as regular soldiers after six years of service, provided they meet prescribed selection criteria and express willingness. This follows a review where the Defence Forces reported positive feedback regarding the discipline and motivation of Agniveers.

Separately, Hooda accused the BJP leadership in Haryana of failing to fulfil a 2014 promise to regularise guest teachers. He demanded the immediate regularisation of these teachers, alleging the government is reneging on its assurances.
