Search underway for fisherman missing off Tuticorin coast

Local fishermen have deployed two boats to find Thambi Raj after he fell overboard during a night voyage on Friday.

A search and rescue operation is currently being conducted for a fisherman who went missing after falling into the sea off the Tuticorin coast in Tamil Nadu, according to The Federal.

The missing man, identified as Thambi Raj from the Matta Kadai area, had gone out to sea on Friday. Local fishermen said the incident happened at night while a mechanised boat was returning to the Tuticorin fishing harbour.

Fishermen reported that Raj fell into rough waters approximately five nautical miles off the coast due to strong winds. Fellow fishermen have since used two mechanised boats to carry out an intensive search in the area.

The local fishing community has alleged that the Fisheries Department has not yet sent departmental rescue boats to assist, despite being informed of the incident.

The fishermen have called on the Fisheries Department to act quickly to find the missing man.
