Death toll rises to three in Old Delhi building collapse

Rescue teams recovered a fourth body from the debris of an under-construction structure in Chawri Bazar on Saturday.

The death toll from the collapse of a three-storey building in Old Delhi's Chawri Bazar area has reached three, according to The News Mill. On Saturday, rescue teams recovered the body of 40-year-old Pankaj Sharma, a resident of Khagaria district in Bihar, from the site.

Authorities have accounted for five individuals from the debris so far. Of these, three people are dead and two others sustained injuries. The injured workers are reported to be in stable condition and have received medical treatment.

The structure collapsed on Thursday morning in the Hauz Qazi area near the Chawri Bazar Metro station. The incident prompted a large-scale rescue operation involving the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), the Delhi Police, and the Delhi Fire Services.

Sub-Divisional Magistrate Manoj Kumar said a four-storey structure had been built on a small plot and suggested the collapse occurred because temporary support was removed while concrete was still wet. An MCD official stated that no building plan had been sanctioned for the structure.

Police have arrested three contractors, identified as Siraj, Tajuddin, and Furkan, from Faridabad district in Haryana. They have been charged under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and investigations into the incident are ongoing.
