Maharashtra makes NET, SET and SLET mandatory for assistant professor recruitment
The state government has revised eligibility criteria for direct recruitment in higher education institutions to ensure uniformity in the appointment process.
The Maharashtra government has made the National Eligibility Test (NET), State Eligibility Test (SET), or State Level Eligibility Test (SLET) mandatory for the direct recruitment of assistant professors, according to the Hindustan Times.
The higher and technical education department issued a revised government resolution (GR) on November 4 to clarify the minimum educational qualifications needed for these appointments in all higher education institutions.
This new provision replaces a clause from a March 2019 GR and aims to resolve confusion regarding the implementation of University Grants Commission (UGC) regulations issued on June 30, 2023.
The decision follows questions regarding whether PhD and MPhil degree holders were being exempted from eligibility examinations in certain recruitment processes.
Kushal Mude, national coordinator of the All India NET-SET Teachers Organisation, said the rule would create uniformity and ensure candidates are assessed through national and state level examinations.
Mude added that while these tests are mandatory, they were not always being implemented effectively in some areas where PhD holders were receiving exemptions.
