Tamil Nadu forms Chief Secretary-led commission to boost investments

The Tamil Nadu Investment Promotion Commission aims to convert investment commitments into operational projects to reach a $1.5 trillion economy target by 2036.

The Tamil Nadu government has established the Tamil Nadu Investment Promotion Commission (TNIPC) to drive industrial growth and manage investments linked to India's Free Trade Agreements (FTAs). According to NorthBlockSouthBlock, the high-level body will also target investors of Tamil origin living abroad.

Headed by the Chief Secretary, the commission was notified on Tuesday by the Industries, Investment Promotion and Commerce Department. The move follows the Tamil Nadu Business Facilitation (Amendment) Act, 2026, which came into effect on November 3, 2026.

The TNIPC includes the Secretary of the Industries, Investment Promotion and Commerce Department as its Member-Convener. Urban Acres reported that the 20-member commission brings together various department secretaries, including those for finance, energy, environment, and MSMEs, to streamline approvals.

The commission also includes the Commissioners of Land Reforms and Land Administration, the Member-Secretary of the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board, and the Managing Director of Guidance Tamil Nadu. This structure aims to resolve administrative hurdles regarding land, water, and electricity.

The state intends to use this mechanism to ensure that memoranda of understanding move toward actual commercial operations and job creation. This supports Tamil Nadu's goal of reaching a $1.5 trillion economy by 2036.

Additionally, the state aims to increase merchandise exports from $59 billion to $72 billion during the 2026-27 financial year. The government has set specific export targets for all 38 districts to achieve this.
