Tamil Nadu government disbands High-Level Committee on Union-State Relations
The mandate to review constitutional provisions and strengthen federalism has been transferred to the State Law Commission.
The Tamil Nadu government has disbanded the High-Level Committee on Union-State Relations and transferred its mandate to the State Law Commission, according to a Government Order (G.O.) issued on November 6, 2026, as reported by The Hindu.
The committee was originally formed in April 2025 under the previous DMK regime when then Chief Minister M.K. Stalin announced a three-member panel to review policies concerning Centre-State relations. The panel aimed to recommend measures to strengthen state autonomy and federalism.
Retired Supreme Court Judge Justice Kurian Joseph chaired the committee, which included members retired IAS officer K. Ashok Vardhan Shetty and former State Planning Commission Vice-Chairman M. Naganathan.
The committee had submitted Part I of its report to M.K. Stalin on February 16.
The G.O. stated that the High-Level Committee was a non-statutory body with functions that overlap with the Tamil Nadu State Law Commission. The government decided to discontinue the committee's services with immediate effect after careful consideration.
The Tamil Nadu State Law Commission was re-constituted on August 7, 2026. It is tasked with examining matters relating to Inter-State and Centre-State relations, reviewing existing laws, and improving the state's legal and institutional framework.
