Karnataka tests petrol samples at 67 locations over ethanol blending complaints

Chief Minister D K Shivakumar said the state is investigating reports that 31.5 per cent ethanol blending is impacting vehicle engines.

Karnataka Chief Minister D K Shivakumar said on Sunday that petrol samples have been collected and tested at 67 locations across the state. This action follows reports that increased ethanol blending is negatively impacting vehicle engine performance, according to The Indian Express.

Shivakumar stated that the state government is looking into grievances concerning the 31.5 per cent ethanol being mixed into petrol. He noted that instructions have been given to the relevant minister and the central government has been informed.

The Chief Minister said thousands of motorists have reported issues such as engines stalling while moving, reduced mileage, and vehicles failing to travel expected distances. Inspections were conducted at petrol pumps as well as during the distribution and blending stages.

Shivakumar said the central government must take responsibility for the matter, noting that fuel quality and public safety are essential. He added that increasing the blending ratio to profit from lower ethanol costs is not acceptable.

The Chief Minister also questioned why leaders from the BJP, JD(S), and Leader of the Opposition R Ashoka have remained silent on the issue. He stated that all should speak up on matters of public interest.

The concerned minister is expected to hold a press conference on Monday to share the inspection findings and discuss the next steps.
