The regulator seized food products worth over Rs 63 lakh and suspended licences across several divisions during a special enforcement campaign.
The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) suspended food business licences and seized large quantities of food products during a special inspection drive ahead of Diwali. According to reports from Urban Acres, The Economic Times and Free Press Journal, the inspections were conducted across the state's seven divisions on November 4, 5, 6 and 7.
The enforcement drive targeted various establishments, including hotels, sweet shops, grocery stores, caterers, and e-commerce entities. Among those facing action was Blink Commerce Private Limited, which operates the Blinkit platform, in Wardha. Other establishments mentioned include Mumbai’s Rajdhani Biryani Centre, Aradhana Dryfruit Sweets in Bhiwandi, and the Orient Club in Mumbai.
The FDA reported several violations, such as unhygienic manufacturing and storage conditions, inadequate pest control, and a lack of mandatory records like water analysis reports and medical fitness certificates for food handlers. Inspectors also noted the absence of wire mesh on windows and insufficient temperature-control systems.
During the inspections, the regulator seized food articles including khoya, mawa, paneer, ghee, edible oil, and various sweets. The Economic Times reported that 17,824 kg of food products valued at Rs 63.09 lakh were seized from 29 establishments and vehicles. Urban Acres stated that more than 39,485.42 kg of food products worth approximately Rs 1.35 crore were seized from more than 70 establishments.
FDA Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe stated that the department would maintain strict enforcement regardless of the size or brand of a food business. He said that while honest businesses have the department's cooperation, no leniency will be shown to those who endanger public health.
