Sony launches MDR-3R wired headphones inspired by 1979 model
The new headphones feature a USB Type-C connection and an integrated microphone while maintaining the original design and packaging.
Sony has released the MDR-3R wired headphones, a revival of the classic MDR-3 model that debuted with the first Walkman in 1979, according to Moneycontrol.
The updated version keeps the angular folding structure and thin metal headband of the 1979 version. It weighs 38 grams and includes two sets of foam earpads in orange and blue.
While the original used a 3.5mm jack, the MDR-3R uses a USB Type-C connection. The cable includes a microphone and three-button in-line controls for volume, playback, and voice assistants.
The headphones use 23mm driver units based on original design drawings. Sony stated these drivers aim to keep the original sound signature while providing better bass and a wider frequency range.
The device features an open acoustic design with sound holes on the earcups to provide clear vocals, though Sony noted this may cause sound leakage. The model lacks Bluetooth, active noise cancellation, and an official IP rating.
The MDR-3R will be available in November for £49 in the UK, $60 in the US, and €59 in Europe.
