Six killed as gunman opens fire in Krakow's Main Market Square

A Polish man suspected of having far-right ties was shot and arrested after firing at random people from a car.

A gunman killed six people, including four women and two men, after opening fire in Krakow's Main Market Square on Saturday, according to reports from BBC News, Hindustan Times and The New Indian Express.

The attack began shortly before 15:00 local time when the assailant drove into the square and shot at people from his vehicle, police said. The perpetrator, described as a 24 or 25-year-old Polish man, was shot and wounded during a gunfight with armed officers and taken to hospital for surgery.

Krakow police spokesperson Katarzyna Cislo said the attacker wore military-style clothing and used a military-type long gun. Authorities found many pieces of weapons and ammunition in the suspect's vehicle.

At least 15 people were wounded in the attack, including two police officers. Interior Minister Marcin Kierwinski stated one officer is in very critical condition after being shot three times and is undergoing surgery.

A minister said early investigations indicate the attacker was an ultra-nationalist inspired by far-right ideologies. Polish media reported the suspect had a firearms permit and may have obtained weapons from his family home.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk is travelling to Krakow and is expected to address the city later on Saturday. Krakow Mayor Łukasz Gibała has declared a period of mourning until Wednesday, November 11.
