Cyclone Murasu likely to hit Andhra Pradesh coast on Tuesday

The India Meteorological Department predicts a new cyclonic storm will reach the coast following the recent impact of Cyclone Arnab.

A depression in the Bay of Bengal is expected to develop into a cyclonic storm named Murasu, which is forecast to hit the Andhra Pradesh coast on Tuesday morning, according to a Business Standard report citing the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra stated that the storm could have wind speeds of 80 to 90 kmph, with gusts reaching 100 kmph. The department has advised fishermen to stay away from the sea until at least Wednesday afternoon and to return to harbour if they are currently at sea.

The system originated as a low-pressure area over the South Andaman Sea and adjoining North Andaman Sea and islands on Friday. It moved west-northwestwards and was identified as a well-marked low-pressure area over the southeast Bay of Bengal on Saturday morning, according to a bulletin from the IMD, Amaravati.

Very heavy rainfall is predicted for Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema on November 2 and 3, with isolated extremely heavy falls possible. Southern Odisha is also expected to see heavy rain on November 3 and 4.

This weather event follows Cyclone Arnab, which caused three deaths and damaged 31 houses in Andhra Pradesh. During Arnab, heavy rain was recorded in coastal areas, with some locations seeing more than 200 mm of rainfall.
