Trade union leaders hold satyagraha outside Madhyamam office in Kozhikode
The Joint Trade Union Committee protested against the management's failure to resolve an indefinite strike that has lasted for two months.
Central and State-level trade union leaders held a satyagraha outside the Madhyamam daily headquarters in Kozhikode on Saturday, October 31. According to The Hindu, the protest was organised by the Joint Trade Union Committee.
The agitation was held to protest the management's failure to end an indefinite strike that has been ongoing for two months. The unions also highlighted that salary arrears have entered their ninth month.
The indefinite strike began on September 3 under the Kerala Union of Working Journalists and the Kerala Newspaper Employees’ Federation, with support from the Joint Trade Union Coordination Committee. CITU general secretary Elamaram Kareem inaugurated the satyagraha.
The unions alleged that the management and the government have shown indifference to the agitation. They claimed the management pays contractual employees regularly while withholding dues for permanent staff to force resignations or contractual employment.
The unions further alleged that permanent employees have received only a nominal part of their February salary as October ended.
