Kerala DGP seeks report on Congress leader's alleged station trespass
State Police Chief Ravada Azad Chandrasekhar has requested a report from the Pathanamthitta SP regarding an incident at Adoor police station.
Kerala State Police Chief Ravada Azad Chandrasekhar on Sunday sought a report from the Pathanamthitta Superintendent of Police (SP) regarding an incident involving Congress leader Sreenadevi Kunjamma. Kunjamma, a member of the Pathanamthitta District Panchayat, allegedly trespassed into the Adoor police station and spoke to an accused person in the lock-up.
The intervention follows the emergence of CCTV footage from the July 11 incident, which was released after an application under the Right to Information Act. The footage shows Youth Congress workers, led by Fenny Nainan, intercepting a police jeep and allegedly forcing their way into the station.
The incident occurred when police brought YouTuber Rajan Joseph to the station following his arrest in Ernakulam. Joseph was detained following a complaint that he circulated a defamatory video about Kunjamma on social media.
Chandrasekhar stated that while it is normal for elected representatives to visit police stations, the department will examine if anything beyond that occurred. He said the assault by Youth Congress workers on an accused in custody is a serious matter and any police lapses will be investigated.
District Police Chief R. Anand has directed a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP)-level probe. This inquiry will examine the clashes outside the station and whether local police personnel provided tacit support or failed to prevent the breach.
The Adoor police registered a case against 20 people in connection with the assault, during which at least one police officer sustained injuries.
