Andhra Pradesh power utilities on high alert for new cyclone

Special Chief Secretary K. Vijayanand has directed electricity utilities to protect infrastructure and ensure swift power restoration.

Andhra Pradesh power utilities have been placed on high alert as a new cyclone threatens the state, according to reports from Deccan Chronicle and ThePrint. Special Chief Secretary (Energy) K. Vijayanand has instructed electricity providers to safeguard infrastructure and prepare for immediate power restoration if disruptions occur.

The India Meteorological Department expects the weather system to become a severe cyclonic storm over the west-central Bay of Bengal by November 2. The storm is forecast to reach the coast near Bapatla on the morning of November 3.

Heavy rainfall and strong winds are expected in south and central coastal districts on November 2. Officials warned that these conditions could damage electricity poles and other power infrastructure in vulnerable areas.

Vijayanand has ordered utilities to stock essential materials, such as conductors, transformers, and poles. He also directed the strategic deployment of machinery, vehicles, and manpower to high-risk locations.

During a review on Sunday, distribution company officials briefed the special chief secretary on the status of repairs following Cyclone Arnab. Vijayanand told officials to finish pending restoration work while preparing for the incoming storm.

The special chief secretary emphasised that the safety of field staff must be the highest priority during restoration efforts. He also called for round-the-clock monitoring and coordination between APTRANSCO, DISCOMs, and the State Load Despatch Centre.
