Congress blames BJP incompetence for prolonged Manipur crisis

Mallikarjun Kharge alleged the ruling party's indifference has pushed the border state into a crisis amid fresh violence.

The Congress party on Monday alleged that the BJP's "callous indifference" and "gross incompetence" have pushed Manipur into a prolonged crisis. According to reports by Outlook and Deccan Chronicle, the allegation was made by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge following discussions with senior leaders of the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee in New Delhi.

Kharge stated in a post on X that the BJP leadership has sought to evade accountability as the law and order situation spiralled out of control. He asserted that the people of Manipur deserve peace, stability, dignity and justice.

Congress general secretary organisation K C Venugopal also criticised the ruling regime, claiming Manipur continues to burn in ethnic conflict. He noted that the people rejected the BJP in both Lok Sabha seats in 2024.

The criticism comes amid fresh violence in the state. On Sunday morning, officials said the mutilated bodies of two missing youths were found in a hilly stretch in Senapati district. Protests also erupted in Kangpokpi district on Sunday night, where agitators blocked roads with logs and boulders.

Since ethnic clashes broke out between Kuki and Naga communities in February this year, more than 50 people have been killed and dozens of houses burnt across several districts. Earlier violence between Meiteis and Kukis resulted in over 300 deaths and left thousands homeless.

The Congress party has called for an end to the BJP's misrule in the forthcoming Assembly elections, which are slated to take place in Manipur early next year.
