Rapper Gubbi releases hip-hop version of Dr Rajkumar song
The new track If You Come Today 2.0 is a regional pop iteration of the 1978 classic.
Bengaluru-based rapper Karthik Gubbi has released a new version of the 1978 song ‘If You Come Today’, according to The Hindu. The revised track, titled ‘If You Come Today 2.0’, was released on October 8 and has recently crossed one million views on YouTube.
The original song was sung by Dr Rajkumar in the thriller film Operation Diamond Racket and composed by GK Venkatesh. It is considered the first English song in a Kannada film. Gubbi wrote the bilingual English and Kannada lyrics after listening to the original version multiple times.
The project is a collaboration between Gubbi, Nandith Jaisimha of Studio 080, and Saregama Kannada. The sampling and composition were handled by SYNKFLO production, which blended traditional Indian music with electronic grooves. Gubbi stated the song is an extension of the existing track and a tribute to its ideation.
The track incorporates reggaeton and disco elements. Gubbi explained that the team chose to make a pop song rather than his usual rap style. He noted that the music company, Saregama, gave the artistes creative freedom without constraints.
The music video was directed by Niranjan Kumar and stars Gubbi alongside actress Nithya Shri. The visuals follow the plot of Operation Diamond Racket, featuring a dance crew from the OGX crew playing diamond robbers.
