Survey of India maps 14,866 Gujarat villages under SVAMITVA scheme

The mapping provides a geospatial basis for issuing legal land ownership documents to rural households in the state.

The Survey of India has finished mapping rural habitation areas in 14,866 villages throughout Gujarat under the central government's SVAMITVA scheme, according to The Hawk. This geospatial work aims to facilitate the issuance of legal ownership documents to households in rural areas.

The Gujarat, Daman and Diu Geospatial Directorate, located in Gandhinagar, is also conducting mapping for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail corridor and 55 cities under the AMRUT 2.0 scheme. Additionally, the directorate has completed mapping for five cities under the NAKSHA project, a joint initiative between the Gujarat government and the Union Department of Land Resources.

Siddhant Sen, Director of the Gujarat, Daman and Diu Geospatial Directorate, said accurate geographical data is vital for planned development as the country pursues the 'Viksit Bharat' goal by 2047. He noted that the Survey of India, which was established in 1767, has a long history of geographical mapping in the country.

The department uses technologies including drones, LiDAR, Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). To assist modern surveying, 102 Continuously Operating Reference Stations (CORS) have been set up across Gujarat and Daman and Diu, with 1,042 users registered to access the service.

The directorate has also finished a LiDAR-based survey of 121 square kilometres at Kakrapar for the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited. Preparations are currently underway to survey another 183 square kilometres in the next phase of that project.
