West Bengal to provide Group D jobs to families of political violence victims
The state government has launched a scheme for one eligible family member of those killed in political violence since 2001.
The West Bengal government has notified a scheme to provide Group D government jobs to one eligible family member of individuals killed in political violence since January 1, 2001, according to The Indian Express. The initiative, titled the West Bengal Scheme for Providing Government Employment (Group D Post) to One Eligible Family Member of the Victims Killed in Political Violence, 2026, aims to support families who lost their sole breadwinners.
Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced the decision on Saturday, October 31, 2026, in Paschim Medinipur’s Garbeta. A notification signed by Chief Secretary Manoj Agarwal was issued on Sunday, November 1, 2026. The government stated that additional Group D posts will be created as a one-time exception for this scheme.
Eligible dependents include the deceased person's spouse, son, daughter, or third-gender child. If the victim was unmarried, dependent siblings may also be considered. The scheme also requires the family's monthly income to be no more than Rs 50,000.
Applicants must submit their requests to the District Magistrate in the district where the incident occurred. Required documents include a death certificate, proof of relationship, the First Information Report, the chargesheet, and court charges. A district-level screening committee, headed by the District Magistrate, will review applications within 90 days.
The committee will verify if the death resulted from political violence using police and court records. The notification clarified that applying does not guarantee an appointment, which remains subject to police verification, medical exams, and post availability. No additional benefits will be provided if a family member has already received a compassionate appointment for the same incident.
